1. Introduction

First off I will introduce myself. I am Dr. Ulner Crnok, an Ensign and 1st Assistant Science Officer aboard the USS Avalon. Recently a situation has arisen which was outlined by my counterpart Cala Stockholm. I have written a basic thesis which I will expand as I get new data, but I thought I would alert the science counsel to my theory thus far.

Being of Tellarite origin, psi factors is something which I really do not understand a whole lot, and so research has been at a maximum over the past few days. From what I understand telepathic communication comes as a function of the brain, or in the case of some rare life forms, their controlling membranes. This seems to be relatively straight forward throughout the known universe and I have had very little success finding examples of things which deviate from this apparent norm. When I first encountered these V'lemian eggs I really didn't think anything different of it. It is my point to show that these V'lemian eggs on the planet of V'lem prime are one of the few origins of psi in the entire universe.

2. Observations

First off in order to properly understand why my thesis is what it is, we must first understand the circumstances surrounding the away team mission. The inhabitants of V'lem Prim, the V'lemians, were seeking to join the federation when I first arrived aboard the Avalon. An away team consisting of various people, myself not included, went down to the surface to speak with some V'lemian leaders about the prospect of them joining the union. I had been doing nothing exciting when 2nd AScO Cala Stockholm had summoned me to come and look at some strange rock formations. I didn't find anything too out of the ordinary about them, but an away team was formed to go down and take a look at them anyways. Unfortunately our findings were cut short due to some strange activity on the planet. Discussion on this will be left for a later date when things are certain.

The first thing that was discovered on our away team mission was the fact that these gems which made up the rock formations were crystalline and the fact that they appeared to have some sort of liquid centre. Upon careful examination this was basically true. The outer part of the gem appeared to have fossilized over a period of time whereas for some reason the inside of the gem had not crystallized. At first I was curious about whether or not the inside would ever crystallize, but upon examination aboard the Avalon I realized that this would not be possible. The chemical compound that made up the centre of the gem, known to us as a yolk because of a discovery discussed later, would take an amazingly long time to crystallize, something in excess of 500 billion years from the current date never mind how long it's already been around. The outside of the gem provided a good process for dating. After running carbon tests on several fragments I managed to come up with a figure that these gems have been around for about 20 million years. If I had further time I could probably do other random tests on the planet and determine its age origin.

The next thing discovered by the away team was by Cdt. Megan McKenzie. She managed to figure out that these things, which I had discussed previously as gems for simplicity, were actually eggs. The eggs were found to be of some civilization which existed previous to the V'lems and whom, I'm sure, the V'lems evolved from. These eggs, based on previous tests, have been around for 20 million years. It occurred to me then to test whether or not said eggs were dormant or not. With the way things were going I figured that there was no way that they wouldn't be dormant, but they were. There was no sign of life developing on the inside of the egg, nor was there a sign of life already developed inside. This point, I feel, is probably the most important.

The last important fact that was discovered by the away team was the fact that these rocks emitted a certain psi factor. This wasn't very hard to determine. I was the one conducting these tests and I now realize that the previous tests results I handed around were all wrong. I was testing for the wrong thing. At the time I was checking for enhancement of psi vibes. The rocks, if a psi vibe is injected into them will enhance it and the outcoming psi vibe will be much stronger. The way I ran this test is important though simple. I attached to psi wave readers to either side of the gem and at one end hooked up a machine capable of emitting a psi wave. The wave was measured at one end and then fed into the egg and the outcoming psi checked with another wave reader. The result that I achieved was good, but I had ignored the original result which is what I should have been noticing. These eggs were showing psi wave readings before the wave maker was hooked up. In other words, they were doing more than just magnifying psi waves, they were creating them! Now as I spoke of in the beginning, psi waves are created through the brain or the other controlling membrane and reasonably close things can be made through careful electronic wave manipulation.

I should discuss the complete and total chemical makeup of the egg at this time. The outside is fossilized and works basically as a shell. No activity that I have seen takes place in this shell. The inside is a straight liquid. It is made up of various neutrons and liquid minerals. This mineral neutron combination is what basically prevents the inside of the egg from crystallizing. The liquid part of the egg is where everything that I have been speaking of as far as psi vibes and such occurs.

Given the makeup of the egg and the fact that I discovered there was a psi vibe coming out of the gem, I came upon an interesting conundrum. The inside of the gem was definitely producing psi waves, but there was absolutely nothing in the way of any sort of membranes or dominant factors within the liquid. Now taking the step between this and my thesis is a bit of a step, but it's one that I felt willing to take. I realize that this liquid is producing psi waves on it's own and that these were eggs which would form new beings if they weren't dormant. Also, these beings evolved into the V'lems, although I could be more sure of this if Megan were given a chance to examine a V'lem in person. I feel certain that these eggs are a sign of how psi waves and psi in general came into existence. Further studies may be able to reveal some more secrets unlocked of this liquid. Until then I will stand by my theory even though it is just that, a theory.
